What is Reality therapy or Choice Theory Reality Therapy
CTRT is a counseling method that focuses on empowering you to make positive choices in your life. At its core, CTRT is about understanding that we are all driven by our internal motivations and that our behaviors are choices we make to meet our fundamental needs. By focusing on the present and future rather than the past, CTRT helps you take control of your life and create lasting change. Within the client/therapist relationship, the client is guided in reducing distress by recognizing and meeting their 5 basic needs.
Our 5 Basic Needs are:
Power: A sense of winning, achieving, or a sense of self-worth.
Love and belonging: To the family, to a community, or to other loved ones.
Freedom: To be independent, maintain personal space, autonomy.
Fun: To achieve satisfaction, enjoyment, and a sense of pleasure.
Survival: Shelter, survival, food, sexual fulfillment.
Within Reality therapy, the focus is on the present with a brief look at the past and the symptoms. The focus on choosing to change the things you can and developing a plan to meet your basic needs. The focus is also on changing thoughts and behaviours by avoiding criticizing, blaming, comparing and making excuses.
